ENERGY DRINKS

Energy drinks are prohibited at the elementary or middle school buildings by students. They are highly discouraged for high school students. All energy drinks have some type of warning label on them that states, "Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, those sensitive to caffeine and children." Children are considered anyone under 18 years old. The incidence of critical heart related issues, kidney damage and even death have been documented due to increased caffeine consumption in young people. Anyone under the age of 18 should have no more than 100mg of caffeine per day. Adults should consume no more than 400mg of caffeine per day.

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS IN AUGUST

***ALL FORMS MUST BE FILLED OUT ENTIRELY***

Please have your student's sports physical complete and in the office before school starts.

All Pre-school students entering school MUST have a Health Physical on file before school starts.

All immunizations should be current before the first day of school . There is a grace period. If immunizations are not current by September 20th they will be excluded from school until they are in compliance. If your student is not in compliance by September 20th, they must have an appointment scheduled. The date and time will need to be verified by our health office. Please see reference Kansas Statute K.S.A. 72-6262 for Religious and Medical Exemption information.

All medications that will be given at school need to be brought in by a parent/guardian, counted and have an order on file before the first day of school.

If your child has asthma, diabetes, meal modification needs, seizure disorder, or severe allergies; they MUST have a plan on file before starting school. The forms are available under the health section on the PV website. They must have a doctor's signature.

Medication Administration and Self-Administration

Any prescription medication that is started during the school year such as pain pills, antibiotics pills or antibiotic eye drops, etc. MUST come in a prescription bottle with a doctor's order before they can be given.

Do NOT bring in medication in a baggy or any other container that is not in the original container or they will not be given. Ask the pharmacist for a second prescription bottle for school. Parents must bring in all prescription medication. Please do not send prescription medication to school with students.

Both grade schools and Middle School: Parents must bring in any prescription or over the counter medications. Elementary students are not allowed to transport any medication.

***All prescribed medications should be brought to the school nurse’s attention.***

  1. Many medications prescribed for attention deficit disorder and emotional problems, including depression, are controlled substances. Controlled substances require an annual doctor’s note and parent’s authorization and must be dispensed from the health room under the supervision of the school nurse. The physician/dentist signature may be on this form or be received by the school on another form including a fax from the physician/dentist office. The doctor's note should not be dated earlier than May 1 preceding the school year for which it is applicable.

  2. Students in sixth through 12th grades with a diagnosis of asthma or severe allergies may carry and self-administer emergency medication. Kansas law states that this self-administration policy require written parent and physician signature specifying the name and purpose of medication, prescribed dosage, conditions under which the medication is to be self-administered and verification that the student has been instructed in self-administration, etc.

  3. Antibiotics should come with a doctor's order. We will not give medication with out an order. Please ask your provider for school orders if your child requires an antibiotic at school. When at the office ask for a doctor's order for the medication to be given at school. When getting the medication filled ask the pharmacist for a second bottle for school. Example of some things we see that we cannot do: give pills out of a sandwich bag from home, give over the counter medication outside of the label direction even if the doctor told your child to take it that way. We MUST have a doctor's order to give prescription medication or Over The Counter medication if it is to be given outside of OTC label direction.

Elementary and Middle School students are not allowed to carry over-the-counter medications. Parents can bring OTC's into the office at the beginning of the school year for their students.

High School Students: Over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, allergy medication such as Zyrtec etc.) may be carried and self-administered by students 9th through 12th grades. Parents are responsible for providing Over-the-counter medications. Parents provide permission during online enrollment for the school nurse or delegate to administer over-the-counter medications. There is a limited supply in the health office of over-the-counter medication. If consent was not given during enrollment, medication will not be given from the nurse's office.

  1. In addition, these general rules apply:

    • All medication is to be carried in its original container.

    • Medication should only be taken as stated on bottle.

    • At no time should a student give medication to another student.

    • Medication should NOT be in a baggy or another bottle.

    • The principal may revoke the self-medication privilege of any student found to be in violation of the policy.

Important

  1. The carrying of permissible medication by a student is a privilege.

  2. Medication such as Ritalin or other ADD/ADHD medication, narcotics, anti-depressants, psychotic medications, etc. MUST be kept in the health office and administered by the school nurse or delegate, with a doctor's note.

Vision, hearing and dental screenings

Dental screenings have been performed for the 2022-2023 school year. THE KANSAS STATUTE FOR ANNUAL FREE DENTAL INSPECTION (K.S.A.72-6251), which states: “The boards of education of cities of the first and second class and school boards of school districts are hereby required to provide for free dental inspection annually for all children, except those who hold a certificate from a legally qualified dentist showing that this examination has been made within three months last past, attending such schools.” With that being said to be in compliance with Kansas State Statute 72-6251. All students will be screened unless the parent/guardian does not want the child to participate. Oral health is an important part of children’s overall health and is a critical component in the child’s ability to learn and succeed in school. If you wish to opt out of the screening, for the year 2023-2024, you must decline on enrollment. It is literally a 10 second visual check in the mouth to see if there are obvious issues. It is not invasive at all.

Free vision and hearing screenings provided by the school are required Kansas Legislature. Vision and hearing screenings are set for the second week in September. Vision screenings will be given to Preschool through 3rd, 5th, 7th, & 10th grades, any new student, and all students with IEP's. Hearing screenings will be given to Preschool through 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th grade, any new student and all students with IEP's.

MENTAL HEALTH

Making your Mental Health a priority is key to a successful life. If your student is having difficulties in life, there are tools at Prairie View to help facilitate a healthy mental wellbeing. Services are available through SEK Mental Health for students who would like counseling at school.

Recently we were asked to partner with a new resource. It helps people better understand addiction and breaks down how to talk about addiction, assist a loved one with getting professional help, and offer support throughout the process, including through recovery.  Anyone with addictions or questions about addictions, can visit here: https://www.onlinetherapy.com/addiction-counseling/family-resource/

Puberty Education

The week we get back from Labor Day Break in September. We will have the puberty education class for the 5th grade girls and boys to learn about changes that will be happening with their body. Fifth grade girls will receive a nice hygiene bag that has: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, pretty zippered sanitary bag, individually wrapped sanitary items, and educational pamphlet from Always, a Proctor and Gamble Company. The education class will be provided by the school nurses.

The same day as the girls, the Parker 5th grade boys will have puberty education provided by Mr. Mark Staab, Parker Elementary Principal. The LaCygne 5th grade boys will have their education class by Mr. Staab. They will receive a hygiene bag: shampoo, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, educational pamphlet about boys puberty from Always, a Proctor and Gamble Company.

It is very important for your student to be well educated about changes that will be happening to their bodies. However, if you feel that is something you would rather speak with your student about and not experience at school, you may sign the opt out form. This form in part of your 5th grade student's online enrollment. The form will only show for 5th grade students and must be marked for either YES or NO for them to participate in this class.

Vaccine Clinics

We are fortunate to be able to partner with The Linn County Health Department and have them come to the school for immunizations. . We try to do a couple of clinics in the fall. The first before school starts and then during the first semester parent teacher conferences.

Sports Physicals

Dr. Lindsey Jaccard comes in the school after May 1st to perform Sports Physicals for $20. She will be here all day. She also has stated she can make a day at her office for Sports Physicals.

CHC in town, as well as your regular provider are options to get your sports physicals.
