1st Annual Community Service Program--Walk to D'Feet ALS

by Lori Nelson

March 06, 2010

Monday, March 1st, was the kickoff to Prairie View High School’s first annual Community Service Day.  This year will benefit Walk to D’Feet ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  The event is designed to help raise funds for research and medical assistance for families dealing with ALS.
All high school students went to the Performing Arts Center to watch a short video describing some of the physical and emotional effects of ALS.  After this, Hannah Stanage-Magner spoke about her personal experiences of losing a father, Dr. Ken Stanage, to ALS a few years ago.  The assembly concluded with students being told about all the activities that will go into raising funds as part of our community service day.
Debbie Likely, Janet Reynolds, Diana Oborny, and Lori Nelson, all teachers at PVHS, have worked to coordinate fund raising and fun activities for the students.  Each seminar group is being challenged to raise the most money and participate in the most activities.  The culmination of all these efforts will be during the afternoon of May 5 when students are served outdoor lunch and participate in a walk, Frisbee golf tournament, and individual games.  Prizes donated from the community will be available to students raising at least $30 toward the cause.
To raise funds, elementary schools and the high school will be participating in Dollar Days.  On February 25th, over $450 was raised by students and faculty paying $1 to wear a crazy hat.  In March, we will host a crazy slipper day and in April we will host a crazy sock day.  Additionally, all district staff is invited to pay $5 to wear jeans every Wednesday in March and $5 for the month of April.  Also during the month of April, high school students will be challenged to collect pledges (check only).
Other activities include a t-shirt for purchase, making and hanging promotional posters around the community, decorate a mini-frisbee contest (donated by Iota Tau Sorority), closest to the pin mini-frisbee toss, best dressed golf team, best golf score, and most pledge money collected by a seminar.
We are accepting donations of money or prizes for this May 5 event.  If you are interested in making a donation or in volunteering to help with games or other activities on May 5th, please contact Debbie, Janet, Diana, or Lori at the high school.
We would like to thank Hannah Stanage-Magner for helping to kick off our event.  Also, thanks to Mary Greiner and Cindy Woods for helping us to gather donations and prizes from the community.
