College Class Information for 2010-2011 School Year

by Sherri Foerschler

I would like to take the opportunity to inform you about the classes at Prairie View High School that can be taken for college credit through Fort Scott Community College as well as the student receiving their high school credit.  This is an excellent way to get some of the general education college classes out of the way before actually beginning college.  We have our own teachers teaching the classes, they have the opportunity to take these classes with their peers, and the college credit will transfer to other colleges.  The cost per hour for the 2010-2011 School Year is $79.  Which means a three hour class will cost $237, while a five hour class will cost $395.  Additionally, most classes will require the purchase of a textbook and those amounts vary from $75 - $125.

In order for a student to take the college classes, the student must be a junior or a senior, have a 21 in English and Math on the ACT, or have taken the Compass test and scored the appropriate scores in English and Math.  The Compass test may be taken at the FSCC campus in Fort Scott or the FSCC campus in Paola.  Both centers require appointments for testing.  To schedule an appointment at Fort Scott, call Mert Barrows at 1-800-TRI-FSCC (1-800-874-3722).  For an appointment at Paola, call Dana at 1-913-294-4178.  When you take the test and get your scores, it is important to save those papers to be turned in during enrollment.  Enrollment will take place the August 20, 2010 during their classroom time for the first semester.  Enrollment for second semester classes will be January 7, 2011.  Please be aware that money is due at the time of enrollment.  Please bring checks or money orders (made out to FSCC) that day, as cash cannot be taken.  If parents want to use a credit or debit card, information on a contact at FSCC will be given for that to take place.

PVHS is not responsible for enrollment fees or their due dates for FSCC classes.  Enrollment in classes for FSCC is sole responsibility of the student and is an agreement between them and FSCC.

We have had many students take advantage of these classes and were very happy with the affordability and the education they received to get a head start of their college career.
