Use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as the Pell Grant, student loans, and college work-study. In addition, most states and schools use FAFSA information to award their financial aid. The application is not available to you until after January 1. It is suggested that you visit the web site and sign up for a pin number for students and a pin number for the parent prior to filling out the FAFSA. Go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
